Bradford County Public Library, Starke, Florida

A blog about the construction of the new building for Bradford County Public Library. Our current building is 4,000 square feet and was built in 1975. The new building is now under construction and will be just 66 2/3 sq ft short of 20,000 square feet, five times the size of our current building. Spyros Drivas, AIA, of Starke, FL, is the architect. We thank the City of Starke for giving us the property and we will give them our building and property in exchange after we move out.

Update -- paving

Plain ole concrete, stamped and colored to look like "pavers."

Looking south. You can't tell much, because the striping hasn't been done yet.

Looking north. The pipes are for the irrigation system.

"Substantial Completion"

A long look west to east. The building is reaching the "substantial completion" stage.

The columns are being finished.

The lime rock isn't far from being ready for asphalt.

Friday the 13th

Our future main entrance. This view is not of the entrance, but of the drive-through and the kiosk which will have book and media drops (you can see the rectangular holes) and vending machines.

Our future parking lot. The concrete posts are the beginnings of the columns at the meeting room doors. The yellow piles are truckloads of limerock, which will be the underlayment for the asphalt paving. Limerock (lime rock, no connection with "limerick") starts out this color, but if it's exposed to the sun, it bleaches out really white.

The ever-expanding retention pond. It will be 2 acres in the end! Double-click and you can really see the water, which is rain water, not ground water. We are now 17" short of rainfall, so there's drought everywhere except in the parking lot and the area where the sidewalk is to be concreted. What a dilemma! We're desperately in need of rain, but, for this project, it's time for dry weather.

I gather you can't pave asphalt or concrete over mud. :(

The red brick typical "county courthouse" building you can see in the distance is the Andrews Center, the Starke Campus of Santa Fe Community College. We are the library for that Center, so being able to see it from our new location is exciting for me!

Almost finished!

Allstate Construction plans to turn the building over to us on Tuesday, July 31. We're almost there!

This is the children's storytime room, with its Forbo Marmoleum floor. I like linoleum and love the "reinvention" of it. It is self-sterilizing, which is why it used to be so popular in hospitals.

A really bad picture of the street lamps going up. It'll look nice in the end, though.

The carpet. Those stripes are teal and grape, both of which colors are in the carpet (and now on the walls). This picture shows all four accent colors.

The secondary carpet, a tan version of the main green carpet. Same pattern, different color. This is the children's staff office and workroom.

A bit of the computer classroom with its red wall and secondary carpet. I had to walk on the cardboard paths, so I couldn't get into the room.

It just keeps getting bigger and bigger!

Lobby floor, restrooms and color corrected walls

The almost finished lobby floor. It should be finished today, Saturday. The saw broke yesterday.

The restroom floor tile.

The color-corrected grape.

The color-corrected red. Don says I never take a picture of him, but sure I do. There's his shoulder!

The color-corrected teal.

The color-corrected yellow-orange, the complementary color to the grape.
